Ledger & LAS Art Foundation Present Autonomous Forest at Berlin Science Week

Ledger is thrilled to announce its partnership with the LAS Art Foundation in support of terra0: Autonomous Forest, a project that rethinks land governance by placing a German woodland under the management of a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO).

The living experiment in shared responsibility links art, law, the environment and blockchain technology, to explore the principles of autonomy and decentralization at the heart of the on-chain revolution. Plus, it furthers Ledger’s own mission to empower individuals with secure digital ownership and full control.

About Autonomous Forest

“Autonomous Forest” challenges us to think beyond centralized control, an idea that resonates deeply with the core ethos of decentralized governance.First envisioned by the Berlin-based collective terra0 in 2016, Autonomous Forest is a legal and artistic prototype. Commissioned by the LAS Art Foundation, the project uses a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) to collectively manage two forest plots in Reesdorf (Beelitz, Germany) challenging traditional, profit-driven forestry.

Put simply, the DAO introduces a decentralized framework of managing these plots of German woodland, allowing community members to vote on proposals concerning their administrative tasks and long-term goals—including the potential acquisition of additional forest land. Instead of voting through an entity that requires a manager, members of the DAO cast their votes using the blockchain, ensuring the whole process is decentralized. To take part in these decisions, prospective community members are invited to buy an NFT, which not only gives owners membership to the DAO, but also a piece of unique artwork.
