Configure my device

First steps with Ledger Nano

  • 1.

Initialize your Ledger Nano for a better safety

Before using your Nano to send bitcoins, you must initialize it. This self-process insures that no one, including Ledger, will know or possess your private keys but you. Make sure you are on a safe machine with a USB port to initialize your Nano.

  • 2.

    Install Ledger Wallet Bitcoin app

In your Chrome or Chromium 50+ browser, download for free the Ledger Wallet Bitcoin Chrome app, the management interface for your Bitcoin account that you can find on the Google Chrome Web Store. This app gets installed in few seconds, and the upgrades are free. After the initialization, you can also use your Nano with another compatible software like Copay, GreenBits, Mycelium or Electrum.

  • 3.

    Connect your Ledger Nano

Plug your Nano with the chip above on a USB port, and follow the on-screen instructions to create a new wallet. You can also import a Bitcoin account from another compatible wallet. Whatever your selection, you just need to observe the instructions all along the process.

  • 4.

    Choose a PIN code

Choose and memorize your four-digit PIN code that will be requested each time you connect your Nano. You can let the machine choose a random one or type manually the PIN code of your choice. Confirm this PIN code and be careful to remember it: 3 wrong successive PIN codes will reset your Nano.

  • 5.

    Backup your recovery phrase

Copy on the “Recovery sheet” supplied in the box the 24 words following the numerical order on the screen. This step is really important to guarantee you can recover anytime your wallet in case of loss or theft. You won’t be able to finish the initialization without proving you correctly copied the 24 words by typing some of them as requested. After the initialization, keep your “Recovery sheet” in a safe place.

  • 6.

Your Nano is ready to be used

Once you’ve seen the mention: “Creation completed”, your Nano is initialized and ready to be used. You can disconnect it without any risk. Now you don’t have to trust the machines you are using to connect and use your initialized Nano.

  • 7.

    Install mobile apps (optional)

Download the Ledger Authenticator app for free on your Android or iOS smartphone: this app will send you push notifications to check each payment with a second factor of authentication instead of using the supplied black Security card.
