Traits Meaning

Jul 8, 2024 | Updated Jul 8, 2024
In NFTs, traits are the specific, aesthetic features that make a token unique and help determine its value within a collection.

In the world of large generative NFT collections, trait/s are the specific categories or features that contribute to the design of NFTs within a collection. So, while a generative collection will have a uniform base design, each NFT’s uniqueness comes from the specific combination of traits it has. Common traits include facial expressions, clothes, accessories, and background colors.

What are NFT Traits?

An NFT project’s traits are what appeal its collection to collectors. They create the idea of uniqueness, rarity, and level of utility in the minds of investors and holders. In short, NFT character trait are the specific attributes and elements that detail every NFT collection.

NFT traits are generally divided into several groups, such as:

  • Trait groupings – These are the fundamental concepts that blend over time to produce pictures for proof characters.
  • Sub-trait – An NFT’s sub-trait is typically a picture-for-profile (PFP) character’s final characteristics or attributes. In simpler terms, if a trait grouping constitutes a “body,” then the “eye color” and “breed” exhibit the sub-traits available in a character’s picture for proof image.
  • Rare trait – These are the character’s unique features. Ideally, they shouldn’t make up over 1% of the collection. This means that only 1 of 100 NFTs in a project’s collection should have unique features.
  • Low visual impact trait – Low visual impact attributes are those that are negligible details in an NFT.  In other words, these attributes provide no significance to the collection’s overall aesthetics.
  • Legendary trait – These are the limited-edition attributes that complement an NFT’s rarity or uniqueness.

So, how many trait should an NFT have?

While there’s no fixed rule for a specific number of traits an NFT project can have, the optimum number is often based on the NFT’s collection size. This also relies on the added complexity or number of layers a project intends to add to its collection. However, the collection must include at least 7 trait groupings, 150 sub-traits, 1% rare traits, and a maximum of 10 One-of-One (1/1) traits based on a standard production of 10,000 NFTs.
